A biblical path for steady growth

Many people want Excellence, but not everyone understands how it grows. Some think it comes mainly from talent. Others think it comes from ambition, desire, or hard work. All of these can matter, but Scripture gives us a deeper picture.

In the previous article, we saw why Excellence matters. Now we ask a more practical question: how does it grow? Scripture does not describe growth as a sudden leap. It describes it as a life being built step by step, as one virtue is added to another.

”Make Every Effort” — 2 Peter 1:5

Scripture says, “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.”

This is one of the clearest pictures of growth in the Bible. Faith is the beginning, but faith is not meant to remain alone. It is meant to grow into goodness, knowledge, discipline, perseverance, godliness, affection, and love.

Excellence grows in the same kind of way. It is rarely built in one moment. It grows slowly as habits, character, wisdom, and discipline are formed over time.

Add to Knowledge Self-Control

One of the most important words in this list is self-control. Many people have knowledge, talent, ambition, or opportunity. But without self-control, growth becomes unstable.

It is like climbing a steep hill. Desire may help us start climbing, and knowledge may show us the path. But self-control is the point where the climb becomes serious. Without it, we can slide back down even after making progress.

That is why Proverbs says, “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control” (Proverbs 25:28). Without self-control, even gifted lives can become unprotected and directionless.

Excellence grows when we learn to govern our time, habits, emotions, words, desires, and distractions. Knowledge becomes stronger when it is joined with disciplined living.

Add to Self-Control Perseverance

Scripture then says to add perseverance. This matters because Excellence does not usually grow quickly. Skills take time. Character takes time. Trust takes time. Spiritual maturity takes time.

Many people become discouraged because they want quick change or immediate results. But perseverance keeps growth moving when progress feels slow. It helps us continue through repetition, difficulty, failure, and correction.

Christian perseverance is not mere stubbornness. It grows through prayer, obedience, trust, and dependence on God. We keep growing because we trust God while remaining faithful with what He has given us.

”If You Possess These Qualities in Increasing Measure” — 2 Peter 1:8

Scripture says, “If you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

That is the goal. Excellence is not just about becoming impressive. It is about becoming useful, fruitful, mature, and Christlike. Faith grows into goodness. Knowledge becomes discipline. Self-control becomes perseverance. Perseverance becomes godliness. And all of it must finally be shaped by love.

Excellence that is not shaped by love can become pride. But Excellence shaped by God can bless others, strengthen daily life, and make us more useful in His hands.
