The love that carries, protects, and prepares us
A mother’s love is one of the purest forms of human love we experience in this world. In a mother’s arms, many of us first learn what it means to be carried, protected, corrected, and loved before we can offer anything in return. For most of us, it is the first love we ever know.
The Bible also honors motherly love deeply. God uses images of protection, tenderness, carrying, and sheltering under wings to help us understand His own care for His people. As we celebrate Mother’s Day and honor mothers for all they have done and given, we can look beyond the Love itself to the God who designed such love. A faithful mother’s care is a small window into the patient, protective, and sacrificial care of God.
Love That Carries Us
Every child begins life carried. Before a child can walk, understand, decide, or give anything back, a mother bears the weight. She carries the child in her body, then in her arms, then in her heart through years of hidden concern.
God used that same language when He reminded Israel of their deliverance from Egypt:
“You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.”
— Exodus 19:4, NIV
Israel walked out of Egypt, but God says He carried them. They were afraid, pursued, and helpless. God’s care came before their strength. A mother loves before a child can give anything in return. She carries because love gladly bears the weight of the one it treasures. God’s grace works the same way. He carries before we can stand.
Love That Protects, But Also Prepares
A mother’s care is not only comfort. Love holds a child close, but it also prepares the child to grow, step forward, and live with strength. True care protects the young, but it also prepares them for life.
Scripture gives this picture:
“Like an eagle that stirs up its nest
and hovers over its young,
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them aloft.”
— Deuteronomy 32:11, NIV
The nest is safe, but the young are not made only for the nest. Mothers understand this kind of love deeply. They comfort, but they also teach discipline. They protect from danger, but they also allow growth.
God’s care is wiser and deeper. He shelters us, but He also forms us. Sometimes He comforts us in the nest. Sometimes He stirs the nest so we learn to trust Him beyond comfort.
Love That Becomes a Place of Refuge
For many children, a mother’s presence becomes the first picture of refuge. When fear comes, they run to her. When pain comes, they cry for her. When the world feels too large, her nearness becomes a shelter.
The Psalms use that same language for God:
“Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
for in you I take refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed.”
— Psalm 57:1, NIV
God does not tell the frightened to pretend they are strong. He invites them to come under His covering. A mother’s arms can hold a child for a time, but God’s refuge holds us through every season. His care is strong enough for fears we cannot name and burdens we cannot carry alone.
Love That Points to the Source
Mother’s Day is a good time to thank God for mothers, grandmothers, and spiritual mothers whose care has carried, protected, corrected, and prayed for us. Their love may not have been perfect, but every faithful act of motherly care gives us a glimpse of something higher.
God’s care is greater than every human picture. He carries us when we cannot carry ourselves. He shelters us when life feels unsafe. He stirs us when we must grow. He strengthens us when we must rise.
A mother’s love can point us toward His wings. And perhaps that is why, even years later, the memory of a mother’s arms can still feel like home — a quiet reminder of the greater shelter our souls were made to find in God.
